Care Certificate (Skills for Care)

User Avatar

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors. It’s made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are ‘new to care’,  employed as an adult social care worker, healthcare assistant or healthcare support worker providing direct care in a residential or nursing home, hospital, a hospice or are a home care worker and should form part of a robust induction programme.

Duration of course – 12 weeks

The standards are:

  1. Understand your role
  2. Your personal development
  3. Duty of care
  4. Equality and diversity
  5. Work in a person centred way
  6. Communication
  7. Privacy and dignity
  8. Fluids and nutrition
  9. Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities
  10. Safeguarding adults
  11. Safeguarding children
  12. Basic life support
  13. Health and safety
  14. Handling information
  15. Infection prevention and control

There’s a workbook for each standard which includes knowledge content and ends with a section where learners can record their understanding and observations in a real workplace to meet the practical requirements of your course.

At the end of this course, successful learners will be awarded the Care Certificate. You’ll be able to take your certificate with you if you move to another role in health or social care. This will help avoid the need to repeat learning if you move to other health and social care roles, though periodic refreshers on some content may be required. Make sure you keep your certificate safe and any other documentation you think would be useful.
